Thanks to its compact body, intuitive auto settings, and superb image production, the Olympus Evolt E-410 fits the bill for an entry level digital SLR camera. Users that have decided it’s time to graduate from the compact point-and-shoot will find the Olympus Evolt E-410 offers a comparatively smooth transition. For the first time DSLR user, there will be much that’s new on the Olympus Evolt E-410, but comfortingly, there’s sure to be much that will be familiar from the trusty compact point-and-shoot.
The Olympus Evolt E-410 is smaller than its large sibling the Olympus Evolt E-510, the Nikon D60 or Sony Alpha DSLR A300 and leaves plenty of room in a camera bag for accessories. While its smaller stature is convenient, it’s a bit less ergonomically friendly and tends to slip if you happen to have large hands.
The live view on the LCD is a touch that ex-compact users will appreciate. It offers you a chance to preview photos in real time just as you would on your Sony Cybershot. In terms of standard features, the Olympus Evolt E-410 comes fully equipped with up to 1600 ISO, JPEG shooting, and autofocus.
For everyday shooting, the Olympus Evolt E-410 snaps photos quickly. Response times range from 0.4 seconds in sunny outdoor settings up to .09 seconds in dim indoor environments. Thanks to the onboard anti-shock and image stabilization, photos taken without the aid of a tripod will still come out crisp and blur free.
The Olympus Evolt E-410 offers a very acceptable 3.3 frames per second in continuous shooting mode—that’s plenty to capture all the detail of fast paced sporting events of frenetic child’s play.
Sadly, the default shooting mode on the Olympus Evolt E-410 tends to produce blurry, cold pictures. Some manual focus tends to improve image quality greatly, but for newbies relying on the autofocus, the default graininess and poor focus can be frustrating.
Because you need to adjust the settings manually to get truly good quality images when shooting, it makes it more difficult for first-time DSLR users. However, it does come with every possible kind of automatic shootin modes including some we didn't even have on our list like beach, snow scenes and fireworks among others.
The Olympus EVOLT E-410 is among the lowest priced cameras that we reviewed. Although the features lack quality in some areas, it definitely gives first-time DSLR users many options that will help them feel comfortable transitioning from a point and shoot.
Even newcomers are comfortable with the intuitive menus and radial dial on the Olympus Evolt E-410.
The rubber eye rest on the viewfinder is comfortable, provided that you don’t wear glasses. Users are frustrated with the unpredictable autofocus. For those used to a more bulky DSLR, the grip and smaller body of the Olympus Evolt E-410 will present an initial challenge. However, for those used to a compact camera, this the size of the 410 will be comfortable to them.
It can safely be argued that there are better performers available on the market at the moment, but for an entry level DSLR candidate, the Olympus Evolt E-410 weathered 2008 very nicely and remains an approachable launch pad into the world of semiprofessional grade photography. Quick response time and a handful of auto, manual and semimanual settings make the Olympus Evolt E-410 accessible in both point-and-shoot situations and conscientious photo capture.
